
James was the Associate to Sir Cyril Walsh J (a Justice of the High Court of Australia) in 1973. He was then a litigation solicitor at Sly & Russell (now Deacons) and Smithers Warren & Tobias (now DLA Phillips Fox) before joining Henry Davis York, where he was a commercial litigation partner from 1980 until 1988. James came to the Bar in 1989 and took silk in 2003.
- Banking litigation: including for each of the major banks, and for and against those banks and other financial institutions
- Equity and Commercial: including numerous cases, both at trial and appellate level, in the Supreme Courts of New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, Victoria and the Northern Territory, and in the Federal Court
- Insolvency: including corporate administrations and receiverships (including, recently, for the receivers of the ABC group of companies and for the special purpose liquidator of FAI)
- Insurance law: including appearing for the Prudential Regulator, APRA, at the HIH Royal Commission and subsequently on numerous cases in the Federal Court and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, and advising and appearing for and against many insurance companies
- Regulatory work: including for the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, and the Australian Stock Exchange
- Trade practices legislation: including misleading or deceptive conduct claims
