Phil Greenwood practices in all jurisdictions and in all types of cases, but he has particular expertise in cases involving professional negligence (including legal, medical, actuarial, architectural, engineering), insurance law and technology disputes.

Specific areas of practice include:

  • Appellate practice

  • Equity
  • Insurance law
  • Professional liability
  • Public liability

Whilst accepting cases of all kinds, he is best known for cases and enquiries that involve complex factual situations, require a deep understanding of product, industry or discipline, deal with expert witnesses or involve new areas of law.  He enjoys a strong reputation for strategic analysis and advocacy skills.  He is Chairman of the Australian Bar’s Advocacy Training Council and organises ABA advocacy courses for new and experienced barristers around Australia.

His emphasis is on identifying the key issues and evidence in a dispute, ascertaining the best outcome for the client and then designing a strategic approach to achieve that result - whether by mediation, litigation or other means.   He enjoys the challenge of presenting a complex case in an engaging and comprehensible manner or finding a way of resolving disputes without the need for protracted litigation.

He is also an experienced mediator and offers a streamlined form of mediation for parties genuinely wishing to resolve their disputes quickly with minimum expense.

Other interests include extensive involvement in advocacy training in Australia and internationally, legal education, woodwork, golf, tennis and his family.
